This is one of my favorite type of book I love reading, as it has 24 true stories of faith by LDS people. Books like these are so faith-promoting and keep your faith and testimony strong with great examples as these Saints.
The first part are by steadfast Missionaries with two young men who foiled the killing of Joseph Smith by William Law and others, who had been spreading lies about the Prophet.

The next section talks about Missionary Heroes, with stories about Wilford Woodruff and a young man who felt he was too shy to be a missionary and felt he was rude, but he baptized many.

The next segment shares some Challenged Saints, especially a blind Harpist and Curt Brinkman, who lost both legs in an accident, who ended up being one of the first para-olympians who also won the Boston Marathon.

We also have Ellis Reynolds Shipp, one of only wo female pioneer doctors who fought her way through school, illness, raising her children and earning recognition.

The last segment is on War-Time Hereos with two brothers serving together with one saving the other brother's life after another soldier had said the one was dead Another soldier spent 3 years in a POW Camp in Japan.

I highly recommend this soul-stirring book to everyone, LDS or not, it's that good and for everyone.

Publisher: Cedar Fort, Inc.
Published Date: August 2013
ISBN: 978-1-4621-0466-6
176ppForever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-26476645325596010402013-08-12T23:09:00.002-06:002013-08-12T23:09:57.181-06:00Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-85523242321182985492013-08-12T22:55:00.001-06:002013-08-12T22:55:25.388-06:00EMMA: A LATTER-DAY TALE by REBECCA H.

When I started to read this enchanting and funny modern telling of Jane Austen's Emma, I didn't knows what to expect. The first two chapters din't quite hook me like Persuasion did, but it finally hooked me.
Emma works as a receptionist for a dentist, but is bored by not having a more importan job. Her mother, by the time she had reached Emma's age of 23, had accomplished much more, so she felt like she could never accomplish anything or measure up to her mom. She even placed an ad in a paper looking for a friend, but not love. She started Life Coaching a new young girl she felt needed help, but when Harri had issues with Emma's meddling, she finally realizes it's her life that needs fixing.
She tries fixing harri up with Phil when Phil doesn't like Harri, when Harri seemed interested in Rob who was interested, but Emma was against the match and thought Harri was interested in Hank, wsho was actually in love with someone else. Emma thought Hank was interested in her and when their friend Jena, popular country singer who just wanted some normal time with her mom was upset with all the fans hanging out at her front porch, she caused some problems for Emma. She realized when Harri had feelings for Justin, Emma's best friend, that she loved JustinThere were a few very funny scenes, the first being when the Thanksgiving Turkey caused a few problems and the skiing trip caused even more mayhem.
I look forward to more good stories from Rebecca, as she is now a favorite of mine

I had this book beside me next to my keyboard as a book to read next, but it took awhile. Becky told me early this year I was on her list for the blog tour for Emma, so I was able to read this excellent debut novel just two weeks ago.
Anne Wentworth is a young 27 year old CPA in Virginia, helping her family in selling their old family home. When she finds the brother of her ex-fiance has bought the house, she is uncertain of what to do or how to react. When Neil starts dating a young friend o hers, she realizes she still has feelings for him. When she was dating Neil years earlier, her parents were not supportive of their dating, esp with Neil wanting to be a police officer and not having a college degree and that she was just 19.
She starts dating a guy that seems nice, but too polished for her. She starts feeling as if this guy is stalking her, so Neil and some strangers help keep her safe.
I liked all the characters except for her mother, sister Mary and the floozy dating Anne's dad.
This was a light read, but I thooughly enjoyed this debut romantic novel.

I bought my copy from amazon.

Publisher: Cedar Fort, Inc.
Date Published: feb 14, 2012
ISBN: 978-1-59955-947-6
240pp

Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-58404912642703420932013-08-11T22:31:00.000-06:002013-08-11T22:31:39.909-06:00STAGES: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY by JAY OSMOND with KANDILYN OSMOND and TERRI SHOEMAKER

When I first received my pdf of Jay's book from his niece Amy, who also published this book, I needed a kindle version for my pc, so I found a used copy on amazon for 4.00 that turned out to be a new copy, so I had it easy to read for my hands. I absolutely adored Jay's Stages and the way he laid out his life for all to read and enjoy.

From his early days on The Andy Williams Show when he would smile with those toothless smiles to the current days touring with Merrill and Jimmy, you know how genuine Jay really is. We learn how great a drummer he truly is, that he dated Debbie before Donny did, that he has a fantastic sense of humor and is the best friend anyone can ask to have. Jay is also the first Osmond to go to college and actually work outside of show business. Jay even met his wife while working in the admissions office at BYU. Jay took time off from show business, believing he needed to find out who Jay really was, so much as to hibernate in his apartment for a time. When Jimmy and Merrill asked him to join them in touring when Wayne had to retire after his stroke, he was more than willing to help. This is a family that sticks together like no other. Jay has said he could never be a solo act like Donny, Marie, Jimmy or Merrill. Jay has a penchant for details, like names, dates and places like I do, so Jay, if you ever read this, we need to meet. and, make sure you bring Merrill and Jimmy. LOL

Jay has been an exceptional Home Teacher, going the extra mile, always calling his families when he's on the road or making sure he gets someone to check on them. Jay is now finally a grandfather. Once he felt sorry he'd never served a regular mission for The Church, but after talking with his Home Teacher one day, he came to realize all The Osmonds performing had been set apart as special missionary ambassadors and they hadn't been released, so he said he needed to do his part.

One time while performing, Alan got too close to Jay, causing him to break Jay's nose. I know the feeling, as my sister Debbie kicked me, causing her to break my nose. I was around 20, she 15. Anyway, they finished their performance, then Jay was taken to the ER for sutures. For the longest time, Jay was angry with Alan, but did finally forgive him. Jay is very sensitive, even though he is easy-going.

Jay was against the building of their studio in Orem, but was great in producing the show and doing the Choreography.

If you like autobiographies like I do, you'll love Jay's, as you'll come to know the real, up close and personal Jay Osmond.

I got my pdf copy from Amy Osmond Cook and bought my hardbound copy from amazon.

Publisher: Sourced Media Books
Date Published: January 1, 2010
ISBN: 978-0-9841068-4-4
294ppForever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-24101271730183792122013-07-21T00:06:00.000-06:002013-07-21T00:06:07.340-06:00HEAVEN'S JUST A PRAYER AWAY by DIONY GEORGE

This is a book I've needed in my life, as a couple situations have occurred that prayers have helped me with. I've always taken problems to The Lord, getting the calmness and peace that comes with prayers. Because of my mobility issues the past few years, I've not been able to get on my knees to do my prayers.

The thing i like so much about this book is how it's laid out with stories that Diony herself has experienced, from helping a young mother find the perfect skirt to wear to Church, from Joseph Smith's keeping the Gold Plates safe, from Corrie Ten Boom's facing her SS guard from the concentration camp after the war and forgiving him after her prayer, from the time her son from Alaska called, saying he needed her to pray for him when he couldn't after needing emergency surgery from the time she was able to finish sewing her daughter's wedding dress by asking Heavenly Father for help for the time her husband was late getting home from a late night meeting from work. When we take our problems to the Lord in prayer, He will answer them in His way and time.

I would recommend this fast read to anyone having struggles with prayer.

I received my Kindle copy from CFI.

Publisher: Cedar Fort, Inc.
Published Date: July 9, 2013
ASIN: B00E0218X2
89pp
Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-25989999408413998392013-06-10T03:14:00.001-06:002013-06-10T03:14:53.376-06:00WARRIOR SOS: INTERVIEWS, INSIGHTS AND INSPIRATION by JEFFERY DENNING

When I noticed Jeffery Dennings name in a comment field on my good friend Candace Salima's status back in late Dec,early Jan., I wondered if we were cousins, as my maternal grandmother, Sarah's maiden name was Denning and there are tons of Dennings in Idaho and Utah. Well, to make a long story short, Jeff's grandfaher Bert Jones Denning is my grandmother's brother, which makes Jeff and I 1st cousins, twice removed.

Once Jeff found out I was a book reviewer, he asked me if I would be interested in reviewing his new book about the military, and since I have totally supported olur troops since Vietnam, I was onboard and then, I also am proud to share with you that all my male relatives, from my grandfather down to my new son-in-law, have served in a war, and I can't help but be extremely proud of them all.
Grandpa Andy served in the Navy in the China Seas in World War I, Grandpa John (known as Jack) served in World War I in the Cavalry fighting Pancho Villa, Uncle David flying bombers over England and Germany, Uncle Stan on a Navy ship as a Radioman. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor the day of the attack. Uncle Ray was stationed on Guam and Iwa Jima as a Marine. Uncle Gordon served in the Battle of the Bulge. He did get captured and won several prestiguous medals. Uncle Dick served in the Air Force in World War II, Uncle Bruce served at the tail end of World War II in Occupied Japan and his twin brother Bob served in World War II on the ship The USS Boxer. Uncle Norm was in the Naval Air Force, stationed in Northern California during The Korean War. Uncle Herb was in the Navy during World War II. My dad, Gordon, wanted to follow his older brother David into serving Our Country, so he and his friend went to the National Guard to enlist at the age of 13, but my Grandma Jo had to go bail him out. He finally did get into the Navy after the War and was stationed aboard the USS New Jersey as a Gunner's Mate. He got his high school diploma while there. My dad's Uncle Jack served in the Air Force in World War II, yet was just 7 years older than dad.

My cousin Mike served 2-3 tours of Vietnam in the Army. He was in the reserves for years after. And, you know Jeff. My Cousin Herb was at West Point and was in the Navy for some time, not sure how long. My brother-in-law Rick served in the Army guarding the soldiers there, not seeing any action. My other sister's husband, George served in the Army in Vietnam. My husband served in the Air Force from '66-'70 stateside working on the electronics on the F-106. And, for the last but not leastis my new son-in-law Justin, who served in the Army in Bosnia.

Jeff created a blog Warrior SOS to interview former military for purposes of finding out what they each have done while being deployed and what they've each accomplished and how their combat experiences have changed them. We hear from several different men from different Wars and how each of their experiences affected their lives forever.

What with PTSD and TBI that inflicts so many of our courageous men and female soldiers, it's great that they are getting the much-needed help to be able to have better coping skills to live with thse crippling battle injuries, as we're finding out that these are not mental disorders. It's most difficult for them to enter a changed society and fit in. Our military serving now and within the last few years since 911, they have been treated quite well, unlke our vietnam vets.

While reading the horrific stories of comrades being blown up, with faces half gone, is beyond me. One soldier, who lost both legs and an arm, felt so much pain for these men who suffered more than he did. These men woud lie there screaming and cry in agony. This miraculous soldier is close to getting his Architects degree from Harvard.

One mother Jeff interviewed was Terri Reid, who saw two sons go off to War. I totally admire her for her support for her sons, but maybe by having a father and step-father having served, has helped.

Jeff's Uncle's experiences in a POW camp was horrible, yet amazing how Glenn managed to live through it, making him more of a man than before. I believe these types of experienes can bolster a man's true character. It's amazing what the human body can toerate, esp with Heavenly Father and our Savior with us giving us that strength to carry on. Some of Glenn's experiences were somewhat humorous and I'm sure most men found some things to smile about.

Reading about Jeff's brother-in-law John Cloninger was special for me, as my Podiatrist is also LDS and a descendant of Julia Murdock's. John was such a humble man, as was my late husband. John chose the medical field that would take the least amount of time, Podiatry and found time to be a foot doctor on the battlefield, then in his own private practice. When he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, he was miraculously healed, but only temporarily. When he was given a blessing, his family felt peace when he was told he would finish his mission in the spirit world. The peaceful and sure knowledge he and his wife Cindy had that their marriage was for all eternity and not just until death do ye part was wonderful and that their hole family would be together forever just like our Primary song says. "Families Can be together forever through Heavenly Father's Plan, I always want to be with my own family and The Lord has shown me how I can." "While I am in my early years, I'll prepare most carefully, so I can marry in God's Temple for eternity."

Cindy's talk on the Atonement just shows us just how muchOur Heavenly Father and Our SaviorJesus Christ loves us and can help us on our way back to Him. It is profound, yet so simple. One most important thing thateveryone shared with Jeff and all who read this remarkably amazing book is how much they loved God, knowing they would be guided and watched over. These courageous and most honorable men and women have fought and are fighting to defend Our wonderful counry, to defend our freedom and liberties because we do win Wars over evil, as Good will always win over evil and this wonderful country has been specially chosen as the Land of The Free and The Brave. May God Bless America, Our Veterans and Our Statue of Liberty.

I received my Kindle copy from my Cousin Jeffery Denning.

All the reviews I read on Laugh Lines made me think this is the book for me and I was correct. This memoir is different from most like Wayne's brother Merrill's is. This book is laid out in chapters with different topics about Wayne's life and there are little sidenotes from his five children: Steve, Amy, Greg, Sarah and Michelle.and, Wayne's wonderful wife, Kathy, of almost 39 years of marriage. Interspersed among the anecdotes about their dad comes Wayne's collection of jokes, some of them his own. While reading the first chapter of jokes, one stood out, as it brought back a humorous experience about the mad cow disease my late husband Bob shared in a nursing home in Ft. Wayne, Indiana back in '04. I remembered a couple more that I sent to Wayne & Kathy last night and hope they enjoy them.

Wayne was by nature an introvert, but listening to his jokes and watching him on stage and how funny he is, belies that statement. I've thought for some time how ironic it was that each of the brothers are two years apart all down the line until Jimmy b roke that mold by being four years younger than Marie. Maybe being born after the only girl in this amazing Osmond family was what caused this phenomenon.

While reading about Wayne's personality, esp with his dress code, I had to laugh at how the kids could explain verbatum what their dad would be wearing in public. Wayne was and is totally comfortable in his own shoes, as he knows tht God loves him for who he is and that shows a great humility. I watched a video on Youtube the other day where a Talk Show Host scoffed at his jokes and it bothered me, as they were funny.

When Wayne was young, he would love to read, but it was hard with having to share a big bedroom with six other brothers, so his mom Olive let him have the tiny bathroom to read and study in.

Wayne had his pilot's license before his driver's license and his kids made cracks about his driving. One time, he, Donny & Marie had the chance to go up with the famous Thunderbirds. Wayne had the opportunity of flying that plane, doing manuevers even the pilot was uneasy with. I guess Donny was having such a great time, he just laughed.

I've been so impressd by the awe some and amazing talent these Osmonds have. By Wayne's telling, he can play 13 instruments and I can believe it. He can play the saxophone, flute, drums, trumpet, trombone, banjo, piano, clarinet, bagpipes, violin and guitar, which totals eleven. I'm thinking if he can play the piano, he can play the organ. He can tap dance as well.

When the Brothers took a break from recording and touring to direct, produce and write for The Donny & Marie Show, Wayne felt kind've sorry he couldn't write and play more rock songs like "Crazy Horses." They never resented doing the show, as they did it for the betterment of the family.

Wayne's kids said their dad would always get lost on camping and fishing trips, but they have so much love and respect for their dad when he stops to say a prayer to Heavenly Father for guidance to get to where they're going.

Wayne's health has been a problem over the years, with his brain tumor some years back and his recent stroke in late 2011 that has caused him to retire from performing. We sure miss Wayne with that baritone voice of his.

Wayne is a regular handyman around the house, has many projects he has completed. Once, while on a tour olf Canada, the Brothers flew to Canada annd the band, crew and equipment got stuck for 14 hours, as Wayne's 400 lb suitcase full of lead for making bullets, had to be cleared.

Well, I really enjoyed the part where Donny and Marie handcuffed he and Kathy together at their wedding luncheon. Then Donny did a number to Wayne's car with tons and tons of cans of whipped cream all over and inside of the car, tons of cardboard stuffed everywhere. Being a part of The Osmond Clan has to be a huge barrel of fun and love.

If you don't know much about The Lsmond's and what makes them who they are, run to your nearest bookstore or buy it off Amazon.

I obtained my copy from Amy Osmond Cook, publisher of her dad's and Uncle Jay's books.

Publisher: Sourced Media from San Clemente, CA.
Published Date: January 1, 2009
ISBN: 0-984106804
235pp

Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-81673255683994544772013-05-10T01:07:00.001-06:002013-05-10T01:07:34.277-06:00GAZE INTO HEAVEN: NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES IN EARLY CHURCH HISTORY by

As I've always loved reading about near-death experiences, when I heard about Marlene's new book, I had to get it and be a part of her blog tour. I've got my caregiver Marlene borrowing my copy while she and her hubby travel to Idaho next weekend, so she'll read it to her hubby on the way and back. I have a close long-time friend who left The Church in '07 b ecause she started believing she'd never see her loved ones again and this saddens me, as so many other faiths believe this. When you've seen deceased relatives as I have, you know this without any doubt. There are those who seek after a sign, but those are not living in accordance to the fullness of The Gospel. Some of us have to live on faith. Faith has gotten me through so much. Read my bio here on my blog and you'll see what I mean.
Anyway, reading about our early Saints having near-death experiences was really eye-opening in places. This is a book not to be taken as light hearted reading for entertainment. This is total Gospel Doctrine and it brings to us that we will see our loved ones again. With near-death experiences, we hear in total detail from each person what they each experienced. Everyone experiences total release of pain the second they leave their mortal bodies. Some say they go upward through the ceiling towards a dark sphere or tunnel until they come to a brightness unlike anything experienced. Some see Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. We go through a partial judgment now, then have the final judgment later. Jesus Christ, for awhile, will keep his s cars in his hands toshow others. These early Saints are shown vibrant colors like never been seen on earth, that the flowers have many parts and we can see the actual life of a flower and see it grow. This is something I read in Lance Richardson's The Message.

Each person said they had the choice of staying or going back to their mortal bodies. Most people wanted to stay, but felt the need to go back. This was an act of humbleness, knowing that the pain in returning to some was unbearable, but only for a short time. These people were told they still had assignments on earth to fulfill before it was their time to die. Some had miraculous healings aft er their experience and lived long lives, while others died within a few years. Some relatives are angry that their family on earth have not done their Temple work and let that family member know, as alot of our deceased relatives/ancestors have been waiting for years to have their work done and they can't progress until it's done.

Time and space are different in the spirit world, as spirits can gol from place to place in a twinkling of an eye. Spirits can communicate via thought processing. Animals are there and so are our pets and can communicate with them as well. There are people earnestly engaged in building big mansions, small houses, doing Genealogy, Gardening, Reading, listening to good music. There are miles of fields, rustling in the breeze. huge stadiums where religous meetings are being held, tons of foliage everywhere.

Some people believe the spirit world is here on earth, but in another sphere, and I firmly believe this. Because we have our free agency to choose, we don't have to choose the path we should follow, but the road back can be difficult, and knowing that it is much more difficult for spirits to repent than we mortal people. And, from other near-death experience books I've read, spirits look in their prime, around 35 years old. They also never tire and do eat. Our deceased loved ones are close by, some do ask how their friends and relatives are, so do care, more than they did while here on earth.

So, please do youself a huge favor and buy this wonderful book and I bought it first on Kindle, but decided to buy it in softcover, so I could hold it in my hands.

I bought 2 copies from Amazon.

Publisher: Cedar Fort
Date Published: Jan 8, 2013
ISBN: 978-1-4621-1127-5
272pp Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-31538213296910649292013-05-01T00:21:00.000-06:002013-05-01T00:21:01.919-06:00TAKE ME HOME: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY by JOHN DENVER and ARTHUR TOBIER

When I first bought this book and read it when it was first published, I wasn't a book reviewer and since I've been watching and listening to YouTube videos of John, I decided to review his Take Me Home. After so many years of not reading a book, and me being older and a little wiser, I came away with more insights and perspective on John. To do a review justice, we need to be unbiased, especially with such a complex person as John was. I've read a few review here that are quite negative, as he appeared to be an enigma, what with the fact he was so serious about life, always taking himself serious, hiding behind his huge smile and his hundreds of “WoW’s” and “Far Out’s.” We tend to forget that alot of our celebrities are very insecure, that they need that attention of being onstage to feel secure.
John came from a military family, not getting the love and r ecognition he so craved, especially from his father. I was raised in the 50’s and 60’s like John was, but I had parents who listened and did things together as a family. John’s mother was high strung, wanting to pllease her husband, who was always gone. John’s mom always did things for John and his brother Ron, which doesn’t teach too much responsibility for us.
John was given his first guitar by his grandmother, so he was singing and playing guitar at a young age. As he was an Air Force brat, his family moved around alot. He was born New Year’s Eve in 1943 in Roswell, New Mexico, though he lived in Texas, Alabama, and Japan before his father retired from the Air Force. John so wanted acceptance from his father. Before his father died in the mid 80’s, his dad had taught John to fly and he got some semblance of closure with his dad.
He started singing in Coffeehouses in his early 20’s, living in an apartment with Randy Sparks, leader of The First Edition with Kenny Rogers. One singer from those early days he didn’t think much of was David Crosby. After singing around, he heard that Milt Okum was looking for a replacement for Chad Mitchell, so he wound up as their new lead singer for 3 years. At this time, he met Annie Martel and they married a few years later in ‘67. A funny incident occured on their honeymoon, c ausing annie to go to the ER. She had a cracked rib from being a little rough in bed. LOL.
It wasn’t too long after that John wrote “Leavin’ On A Jet Plane.” Peter, Paul & Mary really loved it and it was their only #1 hit!!!
His association with Jerry Weintraub as his manager was a volatile one, finally ending bitterly. John enjoyed acting, but didn’t get some roles he’d wanted, due to Jerry. He also enjoyed all the variety shows and hosting The Tonight Show all those many times. I had the privilege of seeing him twice on that show and seeing him perform many times in Southern California, once with my cousin, once with my sister and the last time, with my late husband, Bob, just a week from being home from our honeymoon on 27 Sep ‘80. That engagement was the last concert to be held at The Universal Amphitheater as an outdoor concert venue.
John came into his own when he took his mujsic even further by embracing important issues regarding the ecology of our planet, the Alaskan wilderness and everything good about our planet earth and even our hunger all over the world, our solar system and wanting to go into space as an Astronaut. His songs epitomized all that he stood for. He said his songs were really our songs, as he wrote them for us so that we could feel good about ourselves.
He speaks honestly about his forays into smoking marijuana, experimenting with LSD and Cocaine. He felt badly about the public knowing about his drug days, as he wanted to have his fans think well of him. I never took drugs, even though a former boyfriend of mine smoked pot around me on occasion, as that was just not my thing. In the book, he talks about one DUI he had and had his friend drive down the mountains of Aspen, as he had a suspended license for 2 months. He mentioned he didn’t think he was drunk enough not to drive.
The only time he’d goltten in a rage was the day he came to his home in Aspen with a electric saw to chop up a table and bed he hated because Annie had had a favorite tree of his removed without discussing it with him first. That’s very understandable, but not the right and mature way of handling things, but Annie wasn’t either. Their marriage lasted 15 tumultuous years. John said that Annie loved him in spite of his music, not because of his music. Because they couldn’t have children, they adopted Zachary and Anna Kate.
When John met his 2nd wife, Cassandra Delaney, an Australian Country Singer, she approached him and she would go on tours with him, which he liked. Once they were married and had Jesse Belle, the marriage fell apart, as Cassie only married him for who John was and that he could further her career.
When I heard from my BIL that John had just died in that tragic plane crash on 12 Oct ‘97, I was so saddened and shocked, but then realized he’d died doing what he loved and that was flying. The last song in this book epitomizes how prophetic that song was. John, we so do miss you. Rest in peace.

Now, this the Awesome Book that started my love of the Awesome Book Series with my daughter Sarah buying this book for her fiance. When I read it aloud, Sarah was turning the pages for me. What she had taken the time to do, was to use little scraps of thick card stock with the word LIKE and replaced them with all the times LOVE was in the book, as she was in LIKE with Justin at the time. He loved his book. I knew I had to review this Awesome Book of Love and found that my regional library had all three.
Dallas writes about so many types of love and his illustrations perfectly bring this out, both with illustrations and words, that this book is perfect as a gift for every age. My hat's off to you, Dallas!!!
AN AWESOME BOOK by DALLAS CLAYTON

I just heard of these awesome books about 6 weeks ago when my daughter Sarah brought The Awesome Book of Love to show me what she had bought for her then almost fiance, now officially engaged. I read it aloud while she turned the pages, totally falling in love with this book. I decided to look for them, finding that my library had all three, so checked them out. I just finished reading them, so you'll get three reviews for the price of one.
Dallas had to go around, handing out this first book, e v en as much as reading this book. Dallas illustrates his books so cleverly, really adding to the words. This first book is about dreams and he wrote it for his son, Audio.
This Awesome book shares how important it is to have dreams, no matter how small or big, just that we never lose our opportunities to dream, because we are successful dreaming and dreaming is a part of life to treasure.
Dallas's illustrations are what captivated me and pulled me in. These books are for the children in all of us.

I checked this book out from my Regional Library.

Publisher: Harper Collins Children's Books
Date Published: 2008
ISBN: 978-0-06-211468-6
62pp

Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-76636788830032291382013-04-24T20:13:00.002-06:002013-04-24T20:13:49.155-06:00LET THE REASON BE LOVE: A SONG OF FAITH by Merrill Osmond & Janice Barrett Graham

Since this book was published 10 years ago, I had to buy my copy via Amazzon last year and it was well worth the price. Merrill writes such an honest and poignant memoir, but much different in scope than others, as Merrill sets it up in sections on different topics that deal with life and how he and we should pattern our lives.
Merrill talks about all facets of his life, from when he was a youngster, he would get picked on at school when they lived in Ogden, from the stares and tauntings he and a couple of his brthers would get from a couple of boys from the nearby school for wayward boys, then in So. Calif when they were tutored. Merrill talks about how all these trials helped make him a bet ter and stronger person in The Gospel and to stay strong to their high moral standards we in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints adhere to. Merrill shares his strong beliefs with us on every part of his life and how he strived his whole life to keep to the iron rod. Merrill shares his struggles with bulimia and his image, having to always be at center stage, being the lead singer, and being told he was "Chubby." The image seems to be everything. I've never thought Merrill as chubby, always thought him the better looking of the singing brothers.
Merrill finds out after years of battling terrific highs, then terrible lows, that he was suffering from manic-depression, just like my 27 year old son, who has suffered with Bi-polar since he was 15. This might give insights into his suicidal attempt at 18.
Merrill shares stories about their touring days, when they were going through their financial crisis and coming out of it with their heads high, by going out on tour after the cancellation of the Donny and Marie Show in the 70's. Everyone tried to tell them that building a studio in Provo, Utah wouldn't work, but it survived for five years.
One funny story Merrill shares is a time they are on tour and the brothers are thirsty and there are glasses of what they thought was soda on their table. When they tasted it, the taste was entrely different, it was an alcoholic beverage!!!! I'm sure things happen like this in the business for other LDS celebs. I had a good laugh when I read it.
One time Pres. Reagan came to Merrill to spearhead the Inaugural festivites, even to inviting The Mormon Tabernacle Choir to perform on a 100+ ft. float in front of Pres. Reagan, singing The Battle Hymn of The Republic, America The Beautiful and God Bless America. Their were communication issues, as the weather wouldn't cooperate, so they were cancelled, then on again when the skies cleared.
Another time, Pres George W. Bush asked Merrill to spearhead a big rally in Washington and due to the President being delayed, had to do some things with the crowd until the Pres. arrived.
Merrill was the first of the singing brothers to marry at the age of 20. One of their son's, Justin, was born with a 90% hearing loss, and just like his mom, Olive, she taught Virl & Tom, so Justin was not taught sign language and does extremely well today.
When the brothers took time away from their recording and touring to direct and produce The Donny and Marie Show, Merrill did a lot of writing, directing and producing.
Living by the principles of Our Heavenly Father and Our Savior Jesus Christ have cemented Merrill for life and beyond. He has my utmost admiration, as do all The Osmonds. Please do yourself a big favor and read this amazing book.

Last month, when I was reading Friends updates on my FB page, I noticed an ad by Robyn, (Ryan Hunter) talking about this new book of hers, so I sent her a message saying I wanted a copy to review and suggested she do a blog tour and the rest is history.

I really enjoy speculative fiction, especially one like this. Brynn Aberdie is a young girl not liking the kind of life she is forced to live, where the government, One United, controls everything, even the way you think and feel. Brynn's house is like everyone else's. The main area is below ground, cement floors, the children do all their schoolwork on their PCA's, which are controlled by One United. Brynn lives in a special section, away from her friends so that they can't become close. All the public has been implanted with a sensor so as to spy on them with most of the people unaware that their freedom/agency has been taken away. When she finds out that her father has been killed by "terrorists," she, along with a close friend T, escape to join up with the Freemen.

With the One United officers on their every step, they have to stay two steps ahead, as their very life is at stake. When they encounter a settlement with several people who have escaped this way of living and who have removed their sensors, so as not to be tracked or overheard, they get a breather and get some much needed nourishment.

The excitement is non-stop in this thrilling, on-the-edge-of-your-seat page turner. The imagry is breathtaking, some scenes are graphic, but realism needs to be there to drive the story along. When Brynn has to go it alone for awhile, she's not sure she'll survive and see T again. When the ending appears, it's a shock for Brynn to realize it's up to her to help save a people to get their freedom back. It's a people's apathy and lack of education that allows their own government to slowly take over and though this novel is scary, this scenario could happen here. I eagerly await the sequel of this well-written novel. I loved the twists and turns Ryan gave us.

I give this book 5 stars.

Robyn sent me a review copy with the original cover.

Publisher: CreateSpace
Date Published: September 2012
ISBN: 978-147-9215-40-9
388pp

Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-85975563203380885222013-01-12T01:19:00.001-07:002013-01-12T01:19:33.446-07:00EDGE OF THE PAST by JENNIFER COMEAUX

In this brilliant s equel to Life On The Edge,we find Emily, Chris and Sergei in Russia for an important competition, but when Chris injures his shoulder, the first of their career, they have to disqualify themselves from the competition. He finds out he'll need extensive therapy before Worlds, but will need surgery afterwards.

Not being able to skate leaves Emily and Sergei plenty of time for sightseeing and spending time with Sergei's parents and visiting Sergei's former skating rink. When they literally bump into Elena, the past comes and causes major fears for both Emily and Sergei and makes Emily doubt her relationship with Sergei.

When both Sergei and Emily come face to face with his daughter he never thought he'd see, Emily fights her fears of ever having a future with Sergei and Elena's animosity towards her.

Sergei is able to convince Elena to bring Liza to Boston, so she can spend time with him and have some skating lessons, as she had been skating earlier in New York. When an incident occurs in Boston, Emily is devastated and breaks her engagement to Sergei instead of fighting to keep their relationship strong.

Emily and Chris have to fight insurmountable challenges to get through Worlds, but in the end, things happen to make them stronger.

I can hardly wait for the third and final volume of this excellently written look at the highs and lows of a figure skating team. I highly recommend both of these books.

I give this book 5 stars.

I received my PDF copy from Kathy.

Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Date Published: Dec 5, 2012
ISBN: 978-1-14811-888-9
258ppForever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-53658994011404648352013-01-11T22:57:00.001-07:002013-01-11T22:57:14.640-07:00LIFE ON THE EDGE by JENNIFER COMEAUX

When Kathy approached me about participating in the blog tour for the sequel to Life On The Edge, when I saw the cover, I knew it was about Figure Skating, which I absolutely love to watch and have been a huge fan since before Scott Hamilton won gold, so I had to read this first prequel.
Life On the Edge is the story of Emily and Chris, skaters who've recently been paired up to skate as a pair. They have a new Russian coach, Sergei, who mysteriously quit skating with his long-time partner Elena after winning the Junior Pairs Championship. Sergei has chosen to live in Boston to coach a younger team and help Em and Chris to fulfill their dreams of becomingm the first US Pairs Team to capture an Olympic Gold Medal. Sergei has helped Emily to get over her fear and gain confidence, something sh had not been able to obtain with their former coach and Chris had always been able to skate with confidence and ease.

Emily and Chris are like brother and sister, so they weren't romantically involved with each other. When the two were not skating, she and Sergei would go for coffee each morning just to talk. After awhile of being close friends, they realized they had a lot in common and realized their feelings for each other were getting stronger and in the Figure Skating world, this is taboo, so they had to be discreet when together, soas not to let on about their relationship. They both feel they can keep their personal and professional relationship separate.

When Emily finds out about Sergei's past, she's not sure their relationship will last. She's been able to focus on her skating, but she has issues she needs to work through. When she and Chris win some big events, things seem to be in place for Gold at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.

When a Russian Coach causes trouble for Emily, Chris and Sergei, things become ugly, withtheir careers on the line. It takes a leap of faith and friends and family to help them through.

I absolutely loved this book, learned more about the Skating world than I knew before,as Jennifer loves to go to the competitions throughout the country and we like the same skaters. You don't have to be a fan of Figure Skating to love this book.

I give this book 5 stars.

I received my PDF copy from Kathy Habel.

Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Date Published: Dec 1, 2011
ISBN: 978-1-47010-177-0
434pp

Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-25491765818932616662012-12-30T22:22:00.001-07:002012-12-30T22:22:26.141-07:00SHAKING DOWN SANTA by SUSAN LAW CORPANY

This was my first time of reading a book on my newly downloaded Kindle For PC and I like it much better than scrolling down a PDF file.

Lauren Baylor is a recent widow who lost her Army Husband in Afghanistan, leaving her to raise two small boys, Dirk, almost 5 and Brett, almost 3. To help the boys to adjust to their dad's death, Lauren buys Half-Daddys to position around the house, with one in the car.

Lauren gets attention from two Santa's, who come bearing gifts and she's wary over each, especially with her being vulnerable, being a new widow. Bryan is the local police officer who is suscpicious of Lloyd Owens, a new guy in town, a divorced man with two young daughters.

Lloyd, who moves in with his married step-sister, interested in Lauren, becomes her handyman. When a home invasion occurs, Bryan becomes a suspect, so when a lipstick becomes part of the evidence, Bryan's sister investigates on her own to bring "bad Santa" to justice.

Susan is so adept at combining humor and suspense, with a bit of romance tied in to make this an excellent read for the Christmas holidays.

I bought my Kindle For PC off Amazon after Susan sent me an e-mail, telling me about it, saying it had just come out.

I give this book 5 stars.

Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Date Published: December 18, 2012
ISBN: 978-1-4811-2510-9
208pp

Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-57933273675214550742012-12-27T22:30:00.001-07:002012-12-27T22:30:24.739-07:00PINGO AND THE PLAYGROUND BULLY by BRANDON MULL and illustrated by BRANDON DORMAN

When I first saw this book on thecover of my Deseret Book catalogue, I didn't realize until it came via Fed-exfrom Deseret, that I'd already read this true story in another Deseret Book a couple of yearsago en ttitled Christmas With The Prophets,so I was glad to see a children's version.

When my caregiver saw the cover, she said it looked like an old book and I told her the story took place when our prophet was a very young boy and that the cover was a better representative of a by-gone era.

Tommy was asked by his mother what he w anted for Christmas and he thought about it, saying he wanted an electric train. He knew times were rough, but still hoped for that electric train.

When his mother brought in a wooden train set to give to his friend, he was excited about the oil tanker and hooked it to his new set. When they arrived and gave his friend the other set, his friend was so excited. Tommy then left to run home to get the oil tanker he'd left behind, plus two others from his electric set. It was then that President Thomas S. Monson learned the true meaning of Christmas, that it's more blessed to give than to receive.

I give this book 5 stars.

I received my ARC from Dave Kimball from Deseret and will be giving this book to my almost 7 year old grandson on Saturday.

Publisher: Deseret Books
Published Date: November 2012
ISBN: 978-1-60907-182-0
29pp

Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-2327090079415923792012-12-26T02:27:00.001-07:002012-12-26T02:27:41.677-07:00V IS FOR VIRGIN by KELLY ORAM

When I first was asked to participate in tour, the title caught my eye, so was intrigued. I was not disappointed. This book should be recommended reading for all mothers and teen daughters. It addresses the virginity issue that teens are facing today.
Valerie Jensen is a senir at my old alma mater Huntington Beach High. She has made a promise to herself to stay a virgin until she's married. She was adopted and her biological mother left her a letter and a necklace, explaining how she got pregnant and to give her advice on how to avoid getting pregnant before marriage.
The day she and her boyfriend Zack get too cozy, she stops him, telling him she's not having sex until she's married. This comes as a shock, so Zack dumps her, which breaks her heart. At school the next day, while standing on a table in the Cafeteria, she lets everyone know what happened, and it's not until later that she finds out someone videore cored her onto YouTube and it goes viral.
From there, Val starts her own website, is able to get her jewelry line marketed, a foundation started and cause the hottest rock star to take her on as a challenge. Val designs her necklace and bracelet with either a V for Virgn or an A for Abstinence. Girls and guys all over YouTube are clamoring for these jewelry items. Kyle Hamilton writes a song for her, claiming it a love song, which she thinks is nothing but a sex song. She hates his taunting and the way he treats her. He also writes an entire album for her, which she loathes.
She gets support from a popular LDS guy who she really likes, who becomes her boyfriend. When he breaks it off later inthe year, she's crushed, but gets comfort from an unexpected source. When her best friend pulls a dirty trick on her that turns out better than she realizes, she has second thoughts about her feelings for Kyle.
In the aftermath, Val is invited to appear on a TV Talk Show that is centered around the whereabouts of celebrities and she is united with her birth mom and Kyle, who she hadn't seen in four years.
I highly recommend this book to teens, as Kelly uses the lingo that teens use. And, I'm a grandmother of two teenagers and a pre-teen.

When I signed up for this Blog Tour, I didn't realize then how timely this book was going to be, what with the Tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut on 14 Dec. We need to seriously address our Mental Health issues here and globally. This book sheds so much light on why we have such a problem and it begins with society turning away from God and gravitating towards Satan. This fantastic book shows us who suffer from Depression and Anxiety, how to cope and man age their depression. This book needs to be read and pondered by everyone 14-90, as this is an issue that has reached epidemic proportions globally.
Both Lacy and Gary explain so eloquently, how to change these life-defeating behaviors that allow us to cave into mountains of despair. Lacy shares how she was basically negative by nature. She had a pony given to her by her parents when she was around 7. That pony was old, so after several years of riding and caring for him, he suddenly dies and she became so heartbroken, it was difficult to bounce back and depression set in over time. It's quite normal to become sad over the death of a loved one, but we need to focus on the positive, or we'll lose ourselves to that darkness where Satan wants us.
We have R rated movies, violence in our video games, drugs, etc, it's no wonder that depression sets in and controls us. Lacy and Gary explain that the w ay to bring the light into our lives is to focus on good music, uplifting movies, scriptures, good friends who have positive, upbeat personalities to keep healthy. Also, eating healthy foods can keep depression and anxiety away. Our sleep habits play a big part of how our moods are. Having plenty of Vitamin D keeps depression down. We know that when you turn off a light in a room, darkness takes over, but when the light is on, darkness cannot get in. And, when we're surrounded by darkness, we have difficulty seeing or navigating, but when we have light all around us, we can literally see everything, so if we let His Light shine brightly, the darkness of Satan has no power.
Our Savior Jesus Christ, when he was in Gethsemene, was tempted by Satan, but overcame that temptation. When Jesus was on the Cross, he was in the depths of despair, as His Father didn't help Him, and yet, He didn't give up. When Joseph Smith was praying in the Sacred Grove, he had the most gut-wrenching feeling come over him, he knew it was from Satan and he had to fight to keep from being overtaken by that evil darkness, when all of a sudden, the brightest light he'd ever witnessed and felt, came over him and he saw two Heavenly beings, God The Father and His Son. Isn't it great to ponder that we have two sons, Jesus Christ, who is The son and who is The Light and the sun, which also gives us light. So, inessence, if both Joseph and Our Savior and older brother, Jesus Christ, can conquer depression and the depths of despair, then those who suffer from Depression and Anxiety, can do so, especially with The Savior's help. He is there with us in our darkest hour.
There are several blank pages for note taking, if needed.
I give this amazing book 5 stars.

Publisher: Cedar Fort, inc.
Date Published: January 2013
ISBN: 978-1-4621-1148-0
160pp
Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-12454924027069989762012-12-18T17:50:00.001-07:002012-12-18T17:50:19.402-07:00Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-91963855234185644282012-12-14T23:30:00.001-07:002012-12-18T17:50:43.352-07:00
GOLD CLASH by STEVE WESTOVER
Since I reviewed Steve's pre-quel to Gold Clash, I anticipated this sequel with excitement, as I thoroughly enjoyed Defensive Tactics.
Gold Clash starts off with an execution style killing by a mobster wanting more power. We then switch scenes to a ward pioneer trek in the midst of early Church History sites and was I excited, as Bob and I had been all over these areas in our very own Church History Tour in May '07. Jimmy is an adult leader, along with Bishop Taylor, with approx. 2 dozen youth. They were reenacting the Crooked River Battle that ended David Patten's life, so they were seeing how our ancestors lived and handled things. When the bishop's daughter, Liz, is abducted by a thug who's been stealing artifacts from historical sites, the FBI, with Paul and Emily on the hunt, are ready to get them. When Liz getgs taken, Clay, another teen on the trek, who's been suscpicious of Scud, hides in the truck, so as to see where Liz is being taken. When Jimmy finds out, he hightails it away in hot pursuit in a leader's Dodge Charger and borrowed cell phone.
Clay is ingenious by dropping cloth-wrapped rocks out the back of the truck to help Jimmy find them. Emily and Paul race against time to save a town from being taken out by a bunch of hitmen and when the townspeople decide to take on the mob, it's an exciting time for all, even with the Mormon Gold. This sequel is much more exciting with a bit of humor tossed in. I love a treasure hunt, especially amidst a trek among a real life ward in Far West with the mobsters involved with real gold amidst Adam-ondi-aman, Richmond and Kingston cemeteries, Gallatin, Hamilton and Far West. You outdid yourself, Steve.

I received my PDF copy from Kathy and someone else.
I give this book 5 stars.

Publisher: Cedar Fort, Inc.
Date Published: December 11, 2012
ISBN:
264pp

Publisher:Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-591770579761794406.post-83159100672419910692012-12-11T01:26:00.001-07:002012-12-11T01:26:16.255-07:00
OPEN ADOPTION, OPEN HEART: An Adoptive Father's Inspiring Journey by RUSSELL ELKINS

When Kathy approached me in participating in this blog tour, I jumped in, as my husband and I went through a similar situation with our then 15 year old daughter, who had been raped while on a cruise ship with her biological mother's parents. That horrific event caused her to get pregnant, so we, as a family, went through a very stressful time. Back then, there weren't as many open adoptions as there are now, but through LDS Social Services, Mary was able to choose from aprox 10 couples as parents to her daughter. Before the adoption process took place, we tried pressing charges, but since this occured in International Waters, we couldn't do anything, though the room steward was deported. We tried contacting him, but to no avail, so we proceeded with adoption. Through LDS Social Services, Mary was able to communicate with Lauren's mom over the next 18 years, though we didn't get pictures until she was 16. The day we made contact with Lauren's mom was so exciting, as she found me on Google through my husband's patent and found my Forever Friends Book Nook Blog with my short bio with Mary's name and where she lived. We are now FB Friends and she attends BYU-Provo. She is now 22.
Now, Open Adoption, Open Heart is a very inspiring story, told from the father's perspective. Russell delves into all aspects of adoption. After going through difficulties with infertilty and the strss, both Russ and Jammie decide to go through the adopton process. They filled out a profile sheet that would go online, so they had to just sit back and wait. They finally hear from Brianna, a young 15 year old teenager from Mississippi who had come across their profile, liking what she saw. At approx the same time, they are contacted by another woman, so they thnk of adopting both babies, but we hear no further on this.
When Brianna backs off, Russ and Jammie are devastated, but her mother calls to say all will work out, as she changes her mind. Brianna has problems with her ex-boyfriend wanting the baby, so with support from Brianna, her mother and other relatves, and from their lawyer, they had her fly to Idaho to have her baby to make things easier. As things became somewhatdifficult, Russ and Jammie invited Brianna to live with them, then spend the week before and after the baby came to make it less stressful for them. There was alot more chaos after Brianna and her mother leave for home, but everything turned out in the end. They came to love brianna and brianna returned their love and feel grateful for the loving relationshp they have and that little Ira will be a part of Brianna's life for years to come.
When everyone in our family heard that our Mary was pregnant, her mom's parents and mine wanted her to have an abortion and her grandfather was a doctor. That shocked us and my parents feelings shocked us. My MIL wanted Mary to keep her baby and when Bob's mom saw her the next morning while we were in Church, she told Mary she was throwing her baby in the trashcan. When we were told this by Mary when we came in later, we were quite angry, as we told the nurses that Grandma wasn't allowed to see Mary without us being there.
I've always been in favor of adoption, as abortion is murder. Our teenage girls have no clue as to what they are doing when they abort their babies. There are so many couples that can't have children and the happiness and joy an adoption makes is so amazing.

I received my copy from Russell Elkins.

I give it 5 stars.

Publisher: Aloha Publishing
Date Published: 2012

ISBN: 978-1-61206-034-7

120pp

Forever Friendshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758149408988434584noreply@blogger.com0
