A Quiet Promise by Anita Stansfield

A Quiet Promise by Anita Stansfield

This second vol. in the Barrington Family Saga is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit after much tribulation and sorrow. I was thinking at one time that James was just too perfect, but Anita shows him to have human frailties like us all. Eleanore is a person I connect with, as she always looks on the positive aspects of life, even in these pioneer times. I have the utmost of admiration for my 19 direct line Mormon Pioneer ancestors who went through what James and Eleanore went through. James was afraid to have Eleanore share her newly found faith and religion with anyone in their Iowa City Community, for fear they would be persecuted for their "strange" beliefs. The kind of love James and Eleanore share is one to treasure, even with James not being of the same faith. James has had to grapple with fears he had during his difficult childhood, not seeming to measure up to his parents' standards, having to live in the shadow of his older, deceased siblings. Even though the age difference is significant between James and Eleanore, they seem to have a deep understanding of what constitutes a good marriage. I'm looking forward to reading At Heaven's Door and Promise of Zion, the last two of this very rich saga. I highly recommend this entire series to anyone interested in Mormon Pioneer history.

Surprise Packages by Nancy Anderson, Lael Littke, Carroll Hoefling Morris

Surprise Packages by Nancy Anderson, Lael Littke, Carroll Hoeffling Morris

This third and final vol. of The Company of Good Women trilogy was the best. Juneau lives in Pasadena, Ca and has finally been able to come to terms with a long-held secret from her youth and is reunited with the boy she and her hubby raised that their wayward daughter Misty had out of wedlock. She gets involved with a new neighbor and ward member, who is keeping her abuse a secret. Deenie is not sure of the new move from Wellsville, Utah to Gainsville, Florida, where Roger gets a promotion. She's always wanting to fix things and feels unloved at times. She gets involved with her dog Bear as a Rescue Team, which makes her feel important. Erin lives in Minnesota and finding romance in the most unexpected place after being single for several years. She doesn't find herself worthy enough to be in her RS Presidency, but finds more than she bargains for and finds she loves her calling. It's refreshing to read about LDS women with issues like we all have that can come to accept they are not perfect. Lael, Nancy and Carroll, better known as COB's, as in Crusty Old Broads, just as these three life-long women come to be known, learn a lot about life from each other and their trials. It brings them each closer when they meet up each year or so to help them strengthen each other. These three authors treat the gay issue with compassion and understanding when Cory's father and son have a difficult time with this. It takes Erin and the atonement to soften their hearts. I highly recommend this last book, as it is a big surprise package for everyone.

Damage Control by J.A. Jance

This new offering by J.A. Jance, Damage Control, is as good as her others in her Joanna Brady series. For those who've not had a taste of Jance, you're in for atreat, esp with this 13 book series. Joanna is the sheriff of Bisbee in Cochise County, Arizona. Her first case happens to be an accident off an overpass, which looks like a suicide pact between an elderly local couple, but when the evidence pops up, some very suspicious characters loom in the picture. Another case, where an intruder breaks into the house of a young terrified and much abused and battered woman, kills the guy, thinking him to be her ex-boyfriend Amidst all this, there is a horrific storm, whichmakes recovering the bodies and car from aravine. Then, a young boy finds parts of a dead body in two large trash bags that had floated miles from where the body was left. Trying to juggle a career, a teenaged daughter, a 4 month old baby son, spelling feedings with her author/writer hubby and trying to understand her difficult mother, makes for a good read.

On a beautiful sunny day in the Coronado National Monument, an elderly couple's car goes off the side of a mountain and into oblivion. The terrain is so rocky that a helicopter must be flown in to redtrieve the bodies, and to make matters worse, a thunderstorm is looming onthe horizon. Hours later and miles away, the subsiding rain redveals gruesome evidence: two trash bags containing human remains. This is just a little to whet your appetite for more. I highly recommend this new novel by a great best-selling author. She has her new Ali Reynolds series, J.P. Beaumont series and a 3 book thriller.

Stealing Lumby by Gail Fraser

This second offering of a series is just as good as the first book and so I'm eagerly awaiting the third vol that's on its way by the mail. I didn't want to wait for the other readers from our library to read it, so ordered my own copy through amazon. Anyway, this second installment has a priceless painting worth millions, being stolen from the New York Museum of Art. This painting is entitled The Barns of Lumby, which was painted by a world renowned artist by the name of Dana Porter, who came to Lumby 50 years earlier and fell in love with the barns. When one of the paintings actual barns turns up missing overnight, and its pieces turn up in the strangest of places, the townsfolk take action. We get more of the daily Lumby Lines newspaper, with all the police reports of all the happenings going on. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It's an absolute delight. You can go to this website to join in all the fun of all the Lumby-ites. At the end of this volume, wse hear from Charlotte Ross, the town matriarch, Chuck Bryson, the town Beekeeper and Charlotte gives us her great gardening advice and we even get a little sampling of cuisine from Lumby.

The Santa Letters by Stacy Gooch Anderson

I received this jewel from the publisher way back in April, so read this small book while waiting for Bob at the doctor's. The story is about a family that loses their dad from an auto accident and the mysterious stranger that leaves Christmas packages on the doorstep each day just before Christmas, along with a "Santa Letter.". As the wife has a lot of difficulty with grief, this surprise helps her and her children to learn the true meaning of Christmas. They come to anticpate each day's surprises, getting the day's chores done so as to be together to open each gift and read each letter. They become closer as a family, enjoy the gift of giving, which gets them out of feeling lonely and sorry for themselves. I was quite surprised at who "Santa" was, who kept delivering a "Santa Letter" that would teach the family about Christmas and true charity. Last Christmas, we started doing the 12 Days of Christmas to a family in our ward and we will be doing it this Christmas, by giving a family a 12 piece Nativity. It's a new tradition for us. This little treasure will be another classic in The Christmas Jars tradition. I learned the only way to peace and happiness is through Our Savior Jesus Christ and that family is the most important thing of all besides Our Savior and Our Heavenly Father.
